Goat – Let it burn

I was on a work thing, volunteering to review resumes and give advice for folks who need help with that sort of thing. At one point, the moderator suggests she plays some music while we work so it isn’t dead air.

I suggested La Jungle. Now, La Jungle, my favorite Belgian Noise Rock Duo would have been crazy enough. But the moderator picks the wrong La Jungle, and it’s a french rap band that is uh… working out some production kinks.

Anyway, later a colleague asks what was the band I meant for us to listen to and then sends me Goat so now I’m into Goat. They are from a small town in the northern reaches of Sweden where everyone wears masks and practices witchcraft or voodoo and apparently they were trapped in a time loop stuck in the 70s for a bit and they absolutely jam.

Black Keys X Big Boi – Go Get Tangerine

What a great video. It’s a mashup of rollerblading stunts over a music mashup. Way back when, Wick-It the Instigator mashed up Big Boi’s The Son of Chico Dusty with The Black Keys The Brothers to make The Brothers of Chico Dusty, a wall-to-wall smash. I’m still riding to work over it today.

Unlike the young people in this video, I recently tried to go up a ramp and down a ramp in my new rollerblades and wrecked my wrist. I write to you from my bed where I’m lying on a hot water bottle because ow my back also hurts.

Elisapie – Taimangalimaaq

Found via Said the Gramophone’s Best songs of 2023. I don’t know what to do with the earnestness of this. The song is beautiful all by itself, but with the video it becomes a whole ‘nother celebration.

She’s got a ton of other transformative covers, and I’m listening to some more of those.

This stuck out for me as being like a sad-sweet-Sufjan-Stevens take.

Take a moment if you can for this original – as growly and dangerous as early PJ Harvey.

The Black Angels – Young Men Dead

Apropos of nothing in particular, certainly nothing that’s going on right now, a video of found footage where lots of people died, where the cameras are all focused on one side as protagonists. Where bombs go off far away but we get close ups on the artillery being fired. Absolutely top notch song though.

I’m against young men dying. I’m against people starving each other and murdering each other and driving each other from their homes. I do not think death is the solution for much and stories don’t stop just because we think it’s a good conclusion.

I’m sure everything is more complex, I’m sure, I’m sure – but that’s where most of my reactions stem from.
