About MattK

I like you.

Jon Stewart is not the liberal Bill O’Reilly

I was talking to a buddy about the awesomeness that is the daily show, and he said that one of the reasons that its great is you have a powerful personality on your side, a “Bill O’Reilly” for the left.
I think it’s a common sentiment and I think it misses the point. Politics is not a shouting match. When it is, that’s bad. One of the cool things about the daily show is how well people are treated regardless of their political position. Their is an exchange of ideas.
For example, try the two recent shows with Bill O’Reilly and Bill Kristol.
In the O’Reilly show you can see it descend a bit, but Stewart is always trying to ask a question, to get new info from his guest. The Kristol show is congenial and shows that two people can very strongly disagree on a subject without haranguing each other.

I wish that there was a conservative show as good, funny, well thought out and smart as the daily show. If anybody knows of one, drop me a comment or send me a mail.

BTW- I don’t have cable, but I have the internet. I get my daily show fix from the excellent GPod rss feed. I use Azureus with the rssfeed plugin. If anybody wants, I’ll post a howto for automatically downloading your favorite shows.

Off to Jamaica

So, I probably won’t be posting from jamaica unless Sam lets me nerd out down there. Unlikely. But when I get back I want to see a post on every blog from my peeps.

Also, I just saw the thing about the google feed reader – but it seems to be screwed up. Someone check that thing out, let me knowif it is any good.

Evil Nine is Awesome

My man Raf turned me on to Evil Nine’s first album and it’s awesome! It’s some amazing dj shit.
The first track, “Crooked”, is a barn burner with Aesop Rock on vocals. Preloaded did a pretty cool flash video for it here. The whole album is this good. This friggin amazing. Listen with headphones, there’s a lot going on here.

Also my homey, neighbor, and namebuddy Matt has started flickring with a bunch of pics from his europe trip and his Cali time. Also, he was in a crypt, SEE?!

Throwdown!

Holy cow. The guantlet has been tossed down on the ground.

Mooks and Angst have blogs! Also, they seem to have spent a little more time picking out names than I did. Nice.

While Angst is trying to do something serious and well thought out, but lacking in any actual posts, Mooky is just kinda throwing it out there. And he’s comin up with the funny, even when he’s talking about apocalyptic flu scenarios. That’s hot!

NanoHype!

Fantastic – I dropped David Berube a line and found out he’s writing a blog about nanotechnologies and the often over-hyped literature around it. It’s really quite good if you are interested in the subject.

The man has a way with a phrase: “However, we once again have selective reporting, broad overclaims, and the inevitable straw person to validate their moratorium. This is expected from undergraduates and bad intercollegiate debaters.”

Since there is so little actual work done in nanotechnologies and the field is so primitive, it inevitably becomes the technical fairy dust that anyone can sprinkle over their scenario building. With regards to nanotechnology we are really pre-singularity trying to predict what will happen post-singularity. You can really project whatever your dreams or fears may be onto this unsettled technology. Dave is doing a great job here of popping some of these bubbles with a clear mind – and he’s well suited to it. He’s read pretty much everything that has been written on the subject.

Of course, I’ve added this to my blogroll and am looking forward to more – thanks Dave!

Mad respect to the Autistic Researchers, yo.

I’m reading Malcolm Gladwell’s “Blink”. It’s really good so far, it’s about how you make all those instant decisions during your daily life. If you want it when I’m done, let me know and you can have it.

So I’m reading it today, and I notice that it is quoting some work done by Simon Baron-Cohen on autism. That rings a bell for me, so I check it out on wikipedia. Sure enough, he’s related to my main man, Ali G. Of course, others have already drawn the connection. This one’s good.

RESPECT. piz n ‘m out, wor.
